The African Union (AU) honors outstanding African scientists through the Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Awards for fields that include agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, and energy innovation (among others). There are two awards: the Regional Scientific Awards for Women are restricted to women applicants in each of the AU’s five geographical regions; the application deadline is September 30, 2011 and the Continental Scientific Award recognizes the achievements of senior scientists anywhere in Africa; the application deadline is November 15, 2011. July 20, 2011The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ development cooperation includes Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women – FLOW – as a new fund to make grants in support of rights and opportunities for women and girls in developing countries. Eligibility for grants is open to Dutch and international nonprofit civil society organizations that operate in multiple countries. Grants range from €1 million to €6 million for up to four years. July 11, 2011The International Development Research Centre’s Climate Change and Water program is pleased to launch the call for proposals for its graduate research awards entitled “Adaptation H2O.” Adaptation H2O aims to promote important research on the water related impacts of climate change as well as to build the capacity of students working in this field.
Adaptation H2O will provide research awards to graduate students from developing countries (enrolled in a masters or PhD program) and to Canadian citizens or permanent residents (enrolled in a PhD program). FELLOWSHIPS: ICRAF Women’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
June 21, 2011The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is committed in developing a diverse and strong pool of research scientists, both for strengthening its own institute and for the increasing needs of the developing world. The first round of the Women’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme which attracted five female scientists in various fields of research study came to a close in the 1st quarter of this year (2011). In an effort to further the balance of Gender Diversity among the scientists, the World Agroforestry Centre is announcing the second round of the Women’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme.
Women postgraduates are expected to hold a Doctoral degree in a field related to agriculture, agroforestry, biodiversity, biometrics, capacity building, climate change, ecology, economics, environmental policy, forestry, genetic resources, geography, hydrology, impact assessment, institutional strengthening, land degradation, marketing, natural products, natural resource management, or sociology.

The PhD researcher will be based in the Department of Demography at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences. The Departments research programme, entitled Population Change and Health, Culture and Space, has a strong focus on the topic of Healthy Ageing, and in turn plays an important role in the Faculty’s overall research programme Towards Well-being, Innovation and Spatial Transformation (TWIST).
HAPS
Healthy Ageing, Population and Society (HAPS) is a collaborative program between RUG and UMCG. HAPS is an inter-faculty research program and a collaboration of (1) the Department of Demography, Faculty of Spatial Sciences; (2) Department of Epidemiology, Faculty of Medical Sciences; (3) and the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. The research program adopts an interdisciplinary and multi-level approach to Healthy Ageing, has a strong theoretical basis and applies both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Both academic oriented research and research-for-society is conducted. Key in HAPS is research related to the longitudinal data set LifeLines in Northern Netherlands. February 17, 2011 DfID’s Research and Evidence Division wishes to establish a new Research Programme Consortium (RPC) on Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security in South Asia. This is part of a 6-year program in South Asia to maintain and further expand DFID’s commitment to increase agricultural productivity and promote sustainable management of natural resources for improved food security and nutritional outcomes for poor people. The goal of this RPC is to ensure the use of new and existing research on how to deliver enhanced food and nutritional outcomes through agriculture, particularly women and children, by investment programs and policy makers. The RPC will include policy focused research into agriculture, food and nutrition security and will be driven by demands from national and regional policy processes and programs. The successful RPC will need to demonstrate at bidding stage its experience in the region, in handling complex political relationships and in forging collaborations between countries and between researchers and end users.
